ORCHIDS magazine — Submission Guidelines
The American Orchid Society's award-winning membership magazine -- Orchids -- welcomes essays and illustrations, including photographs, from anyone interested in communicating information about orchids. Each monthly issue of this 64-page, English-language magazine is packed with articles and color photographs. It has a monthly readership of more than 10,000 world-wide -- readers with a diversity of educational backgrounds and interests.
Orchids is published by the American Orchid Society, a nonprofit organization founded in 1921, and as such, the magazine does not reimburse its authors or photographers. However, since 1932, contributors have derived satisfaction from seeing their work published in the premier monthly orchid journal in the world, and knowing that by sharing their information they are helping others enjoy the orchid-growing hobby. Each author receives a complimentary copy of the issue in which his or her work is printed, and five sets of tear sheets of the article.
The editorial style in Orchids follows that of The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual, while spelling follows Webster's New World Dictionary. The Society has prepared a Style Guide for Orchids that contains information specific to Orchids magazine.
To gain insight into the style and type of content of Orchids, read several issues, which you may have in your personal library or the library of your local Affiliated Society. You will glean practical tips for writing and discover a new outlook on the world of orchids.
