Jeanne Buchanan

As orchid affairs often do, Jeanne’s started with a white phalaenopsis some 15 years ago. Eager to share her new-found infatuation, the phal became her signature gift to family and friends. Her knowledge and enjoyment of orchids evolved the year her husband sent an orchid-a-month to her office for a Christmas present. That small, diverse collection sparked her passion in learning about all things orchid.

Orchid people are one of the things Jeanne likes best about collecting and growing orchids. She is an active member of the Alamo Orchid Society. She has served repeatedly as publicity chair, webmaster, vice president and president (she is currently in her second term). She also helps tend the orchid collection every week at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

A member of the AOS Publications Committee for three years, Jeanne writes feature articles for Orchids magazine. She also co-chaired the Fall 2011 AOS Members Meeting that was held in San Antonio.

Jeanne has often sought the next level of expertise when she’s interested in a subject, so it was natural that she joined the AOS Judging Program in 2006. In January 2012, she was recommended for elevation to accredited judge by the Alamo Judging Center (listen for her whoop in Wichita should she be approved).

Jeanne’s professional career includes executive positions in corporate communications, investor relations, public relations and media relations with Fortune 500 companies in the energy industry. She created market messages for internal and external audiences, advised management on likely reaction to operating and financial strategies and served as the focal communications point with shareholders, the investment community, employees and media.

Following her fourth corporate merger and a move to the Texas Hill Country, Jeanne opened Folio Communications, a B2B marketing communications consultancy. She advises company owners and executive management teams on strategic marketing and communications-related issues. Her strength in marketing messaging and positioning builds support for client initiatives and strategically positions them for maximum value recognition.

Jeanne earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Houston and an MBA in marketing from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Jeanne and her husband, Jeff, live on a small farm in Boerne, Texas, where they keep a small herd of Boer goats. Jeanne grows primarily cattleyas, vandas and bulbophyllums in her greenhouse and, of course, white phalaenopsis.
