Etymology
From the Greek pleuron, meaning rib, and thallos, meaning shoot, referring to the numerous, rib-like ramicauls.
Distribution
A massive genus of more than 1200 species throughout the Neotropics. Luer divided the genus into 29 subgenera and 22 sections.

Because of the diversity in the genus, only broad cultural guidelines can be given. In general, grow plants of Pleurothallis in pots of seedling-grade epiphyte mixture or on slabs with a pad of moisture-retaining material at the roots. Provide medium light levels, high humidity, and regular watering throughout the year. The roots of most species should not be allowed to dry out for extended periods of time. Depending on the given species, the plants require cool to warm temperatures.
