20165137 Pleurothallis (Talpinaria) ringens 'Bryon' CBR (Ecuador) Great Plains Judging Center 09/17/2016
Bought the plant from Ecuagenera as Pleurothallis (Talpinaria) hitchcockii. I think Pths ringens is native to Peru, not Ecuador.
Dear Dr. U,
I replied to Bryon but now I see that I neglected to include U on the reply. Sorry, I rushed. Yes, Bryon's is the resurrected ringens. Although we both know they differ in other ways, the easiest way to tell these apart is that ringens always seems to have brown striping (although like most other pleurs, I would guess someday we'll find an all-yellow one), and hitchcockii has yellow sepals and a lip that is orange (and I would guess that someday we'll find an all-yellow one of these, too, but I have never seen one with that heavy brown marking). His photo is good enough so I can be as certain as one can be from a photo that his is ringens.
There are a variety of clones of both species in cultivation on the west coast. I have one of each, courtesy of Marni, but I have seen many others. Both are extremely floriferous. Ringens seems to vary less than hicthcockii in size; some hitchcockiis are quite large. Marni's clone is exceptionally so (and I think her super-duper one was from Walter).

Bryon, I am forwarding your photo to Lisa, an expert on these two look-alikes. I would need a pickled flower, but she cultivates both simultaneously.
