Paphiopedilum coccineum Bubford JC 2024-08-17
Posted on August 17, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Paphiopedilum coccineum (Aug 2024). This plant matches the form of P. coccineum. The staminode and boss (protuberant part, a round swelling part, a knoblike process) are an excellent match to the photo in Oakley & Braem's Paph Species: The Essential Guide. The light color is not a taxonomically named color form and does not need to be specified in the title.

Epidendrum fulgens Irene CHM 2024-07-20
Posted on July 20, 2024
Finding
SITF has confirmed that this plant is Epidendrum fulgens (Aug 2024). The lip callus on this plant is an excellent match to that on the illustration in the 1975 Band I of Pabst/Dungs "Orchidaceae Brasiliensis". This crest consisting of two globular structures at the top and a single central ridge ending in a sharp point fits the species. It is an excellent match to Grobler's photo in the IOSPE.
Dendrobium jinghuanum Irene CHM 2024-07-20
Posted on July 20, 2024
Finding
SITF has determined this plant to be Dendrobium crystallinum, not Dendrobium jinghuanum (Aug 2024). This determination was aided with the identification by Dr. Andre Schuiteman. The description in the original publication as Dendrobium jinghuanum was first published in Phytotaxa 428: 40 (2020). This paper described D. jinghuanum as having two dark eyes (occuli) in the lip and a key characteristic of cilia on the anther cap which differs in form from D. crystallinum and D. wardianum, which are very similar species. The anther cap in this flower and the lack of occuli in the lip matches D. crystallinum much better than in D. jinghuanum. Photos, drawings, and the description of D. jinghuanum and its differences from the other similar species may be found in the original description as published in Researchgate, "Dendrobium jinghuanum, a new orchid species from Yunnan, China" January 2020.

Macroclinium junctum Sparkler CBR 2024-07-06
Posted on July 06, 2024
Finding
SITF has determined this plant to be Macroclinium manabinum, not M. junctum (Aug 2024). Closely matches Macroclinium manabinum 'Bernice' CHM/AOS. It is an excellent match to M. manabinum description and illustration (plate 173) in Dodson's Icones Plantarum Tropicarum. The description indicates a similar flower size with clusters at the end of the inflorescence and the wart-like (pustulate) bumps on the foliage as being distinctive for this species.
Domingoa gemma Cosmos CCM 2024-07-01
Posted on July 01, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms that this plant is Domingoa gemma (Jul 2024). The flower is an almost exact match to the photo in the IOSPE and the plants and flowers in the OW as Nageliella angustifolia (synonym).
Anguloa tognettiae Netherby CHM 2024-06-25
Posted on June 25, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms that this plant is Anguloa tognettiae (July 2024). This plant was compared to A. x speciosa (A. virginalis x A. tognettiae). In A. virginalis, the attachment of the lip to the column foot is an elongated tubular structure folded completely back on itself. In A. tognettiae, the connection is almost straight down. Since A. x speciosa always exhibits some noticeable tubular extension and the petals of A. speciosa are rarely pure white due to the subtle pink spotting coming from A. virginalis, A. x speciosa was ruled out.

Phragmipedium schlimii var manzurii "Kanga'Roo" AM 2024-06-23
Posted on June 23, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Phragmipedium schlimii (Jun 2024). This is confirmed without a subspecies designation. Kew POWO has synonymized all schlimii-like species and subspecies to be P. schlimii. All 7 of the segregates from schlimii are now considered synonyms of schlimii and will be explained in an upcoming article in the August AOS "Orchids" magazine. P. schlimii is now considered an ochlospecies (a polymorphic species with chaotic infraspecific variation which is intractable to formal taxonomic treatment) and all the variables that were used to segregate them are fascile across the entire region.

Brassia jipijapensis Shogun Hawaii AM 2024-06-20
Posted on June 20, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms this that this plant is Brassia jipijapensis (Jul 2024). The plant matches the lip form and description of B. jipijapensis in the IOSPE. This plant strongly resembles the flowers, especially the Lip crests, in the photos shown in the OW, POWO and OrchidRoots.
Thunia brymeriana Vincent Labate CHM 2024-06-17
Posted on June 17, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms that this plant is Thunia brymeriana (July 2024). Recognized by Kew, but at one time considered a form of Thunia alba. It is an excellent match to photos in OW, OrchidRoots and the IOPSE. The photo of the pressed specimen in the Kew POWO appears to also show the ciliate keels on the lip.
Vanda falcata Chiyo no Kotobuki CHM 2024-06-16
Posted on June 16, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Vanda falcata (Jul 2024). It is a division of the original 'plum blossom form' plant and displays the light plum color on the proximal portions of the sepals and petals. The pure white lip is characteristic of the species. The cultivar name remains the same as the original plant, 'Chiyo no Kotobuki'. There are no valid varietal or forma names for the 'plum blossom form' of V. falcata.
Ophrys scolopax subsp. heldreichii Jim Pyrzynski CBR 2024-06-14
Posted on June 14, 2024
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Ophrys scolopax subsp. heldreichii (Jul 2024). This subsp. is accepted by Kew POWO. This plant is a perfect match for Ophrys heldreichii in Pierre Delforge's "Orchids of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East", 2006. The lip measurements for this plant are within the parameters detailed in both Buttler's and Williams' field guides, as well as fits the key in Buttler.
