Talks and Abstracts

Introduction to Orchids

Orchidaceae is one of the oldest families of flowering plants, appearing sometime in the Late Cretaceous Period. Since that time, native orchids have spread to every continent except Antarctica and can be found in every climate except those that are permanently frozen or permanently dry. In this class, we will explore orchid evolution, physiology, terminology, growth and care instructions. “Introduction to Orchids” also provides fun facts and orchid care tips to pique the interest of experienced orchid collectors, as well as beginners.

Youth Orchid Class

This class uses the AOS’s Stuck on Orchids sticker book to teach youth about orchids. This class is targeted for children aged 5 to 14 years old and can be done in a school setting, at a youth organization, such as a scouting troop, at a local orchid show, or at a botanical garden. The class typically takes 45-60 minutes and can be augmented by supplying Phalaenopsis orchids to the children. The AOS Education Committee will provide the sticker books free of charge; however, any orchids would be the provided by the sponsoring organization.
