Biography

Professionally, Eron is a pilot, but he is also a very diverse orchid grower and breeder. He received his first orchid (a cattleya) as a gift from his dad in 2002 and first started growing them hanging outside, on windowsills, and then under lights. His orchid collection really took off in 2008 after he built a greenhouse and now has about 1000 orchids. He specializes in Phragmipediums and blue Cattleyas, and has even done his own hybridizing with them. His most recent passion are the Vandas! Eron has won many show trophies for best grown plants and best flowers, and has won the coveted Best Grown Plant and Best Flower in Show multiple times with his orchids. His orchids have also received numerous AOS awards to date. Eron is the 2020 recipient of the AOS James and Marie Riopelle Miltonia award and the 2021 recipient of the AOS Roy T. Fukumura Vanda award.
Many across the south know Eron from exhibiting at the various Louisiana shows, and he has served as the Central Louisiana Orchid Society (CLOS) show chair on several occasions over the years. Eron is an AOS Trustee, the current Vice-Chair of the AOS Education Committee, Chair of the SWROGA Education Committee, and immediate past President and current Webmaster & Editor for the CLOS. He is also an AOS Associate judge with the Louisiana Judging Center in Alexandria, LA. Eron has traveled and seen orchids in-situ in Colombia, Ecuador, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Panama. In addition to Phragmipediums, Cattleyas, and Vandas, he is growing over 60 different genera in the same greenhouse, including Masdevallia, Dracula, Miltoniopsis, Restrepia, Zygopetalum, C. coccinea and many other intermediate to cooler growing orchids. Eron loves sharing his passion for orchids with others. He currently lives in Harrisonburg, LA along with his wife Anna, and his twin daughters Elizabeth and Julia.

Talks and Abstracts

Growing Phragmipediums in Warm Climates

This presentation is on Growing Phragmipediums in warm climates. One of Eron’s specialties and the genera he is most passionate about are the Phragmipediums, which he has been growing in Louisiana for the past 15 years, and has even done his own hybridizing with them. He currently has about 150+ Phragmipediums in his collection, successfully growing most of the species here in the deep south. Before growing his Phragmipediums in a greenhouse, he grew them under lights and on a windowsill. He has received numerous AOS awards on his Phragmipediums to date. Eron has also won show trophies for Best Grown Plant and Best Flower in the Cypripedium Alliance with his Phragmipediums.

Growing the Cooler Growing Orchids in Warm Climates

This presentation is on how to grow the cooler growing orchids in warm climates. Eron lives in hot and humid Louisiana, which not a place where cooler intermediate growers thrive. In addition to his specialty in Phragmipediums, he is growing over 60 different genera in the same greenhouse, including Masdevallia, Dracula, Miltoniopsis, Restrepia, Zygopetalum, C. coccinea, Paph. fairrieanum and others. He has received numerous AOS awards on his cooler growing orchids to date. It takes determination but Eron says if he can grow it, others can do to!
3

Orchid Virus

This presentation is on the dreaded orchid viruses. Eron has done extensive orchid virus testing over the past 15 years both on his own, and using professional services. Eron became really interested in viruses when he began his breeding program and unknowingly purchased many virused plants. He has researched the subject extensively and compiled the PowerPoint presentation showing many symptoms and confirmed virus pictures. He eventually tested over 200 plants in his collection using professional ELISA testing services, home test kits, and also indicator plants.

"Judging Paphiopedilum Section Parvisepalum "

The Parvisepalum section are Eron’s favorite section of Paphiopedilum. This presentation covers the eight species that fall into this section and guidance on judging these unique Paphs. Data was compiled from numerous sources and this Paph section is very similar to Eron’s specialty of Phragmipediums.
