Overview
Caespitose or trailing-creeping epiphytes, lithophtes, and terrestrial. Pseudobulbs subglobose to cylindric, fibrous, subtended by several papery bracts. Leaves 1--3, elongate, linear to narrowly oblong-elliptic, very leathery, green or green suffused with purple. Inflorescences terminal pedunculate racemes or more commonly panicles, usually far surpassing the leaves, the floral bracts papery, inconspicuous. Flowers commonly green to brown, usually pleasantly fragrant, long-lasting. Sepals and petals subsimilar, subequal, free, spreading, often clawed, the petals frequently spatulate. Lip three-lobed, partially fused to the column base, the lateral lobes usually erect with recurved apices, the midlobe +/- clawed, usually broad, the callus longitudinal parallel ridges. Column semiterete, usually winged, without foot; pollinia 4, on slender caudicles.
Etymology
From the Greek enkyklein, meaning to encircle, referring to the clasping lip base.

Care and Culture Card
See basic growing conditions and care information below.
Grow plants of Encyclia in pots or baskets of medium-grade epiphyte mixture or on slabs without any moisture-retaining material at the roots. Provide very bright light and intermediate to warm temperatures. Water regularly while in active growth allowing the roots to dry out lightly between waterings. Reduce water after the season’s pseudobulbs have matured. In general plants of Encyclia do not respond well to frequent root disturbance and it may take more than one growth for the new pseudobulbs to return their previous size. Similarly, the roots of encyclias are intolerant of old, decomposed potting mixture. ....................................... E. nematocaulon
