Caterpillars
Caterpillars leave the same damage marks as slugs and snails, but without the slime trail, and they are active during the day, rather than at night. They are the immature stages of lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), as well as a few other genera of insects.

They are easily controlled by simply picking them off and destroying them. If you’d rather let bacteria do the dirty work, then Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt is a naturally occurring bacteria of insects, and is a safe and natural product that can be sprayed in the growing area following label instructions.
