Etymology
From the Latin Erycina, meaning Aphrodite, dedicated to Aphrodite of Mt. Eryx in Sicily.
Distribution
A monotypic genus endemic to Mexico. A second species, E. diaphana (Reichenbach) Schlechter, is now regarded as a true Oncidium.
Care and Culture Card
See basic growing conditions and care information below.
Mount plants of Erycina on small slabs without any moisture-retaining material at the roots. Provide full light, warm temperatures, and regular watering throughout the year allowing the roots to fully dry out between waterings. In nature the plants often precariously dangle from their hosts by their mass of wiry roots.
