Cymbidium-sanderae-2022-03-09 SITF confirms this plant as Cymbidium sanderae (Feb 2023); based on Cribb and DuPuy's key in the Genus Cymbidium; this plant keys to Cym. sanderae; it is not parishii because that species produces indeterminate pseudobulbs that continue to elongate for several years and produce inflorescences from the leaf axils; these pseudobulbs are ovoid, only slightly compressed and flower from the base; not Cym. eburneum because the inflorescence has too few flowers and is much too short; also, the crest is incorrect, the side lobes are the wrong shape and the apex of the lip is distinctly rounded; matches photos in the OW.

Cymbidium sanderae was never properly identified and confirmed by the SITF. The only AOS award is 20194134, to 'Emma Menninger 2N', and there's no record that the SITF identified and confirmed it as sanderae. (It was not described on the award as identified by the SITF.) The tetrapoid version of the same grex, 'Emma Menninger 4N', was awarded in 19790424 as parishii. We believe both are hybrids of parishii and insigne. We were told that someone selfed 'Emma Menninger' and offsprings showed that it is a hybrid. Furthermore, sanderae cannot have 15 flowers.

This is a true sanderae as far as we know. Hopefully it will clarifiy what sanderae should be. If this award is identified and confirmed as sanderae, it should nullify both 20194134 and 19790424.
